Every club has a pool. At Brookside it is where the summer actually takes place.
Families arrive in the morning and leave when the light goes. Children move between the water and the snack line and back again, on a loop, all day. Parents claim a chair, then a table, and find themselves still there at seven having made dinner plans with the family two chairs over. It is the least formal corner of the club and, for a great many members, the most used.
Ask a Brookside family what they value most and a surprising number will not say the golf course. They will say this.
The pool does not close when the sun goes down.
Dive-In Movie Night puts a screen up after dark with the water still warm from the day. Family Trivia Night runs poolside. A Teen Glow Party gives the ten to seventeen crowd a night that belongs entirely to them, with a DJ, pool games and prizes. Christmas in July arrives when nobody expects it.
The Fourth of July is the biggest day of the summer. The pool all afternoon, dinner on the lawn, and fireworks over the golf course after dark.
It adds up to a summer that fills itself, without a parent having to plan a single week of it.
The Brookside swim team practices four mornings a week through June and July and competes against other area clubs, with meets here and away at Glenmoor.
It is the kind of thing children remember. Early practices, a season that builds toward something, teammates they will still know at thirty.
For children ages five to eight who are not ready for a four-day schedule, a junior team practices twice a week. They enter meets when the coaches judge they are ready, not before, which is exactly the right way to bring a young swimmer along.
Private lessons with the club lifeguards run throughout the season, for children and adults alike.
A good number of Brookside children learn to swim here, in the pool they will then spend the next fifteen summers in.
Food and beverage service runs at the pool through the season, so lunch does not mean packing up and going anywhere. Ordering a sandwich in a wet swimsuit is one of the quieter pleasures of club membership.
